The North Carolina women’s basketball team suffered a blow to their string of high performance games in a blowout 84-59 loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers Thursday  afternoon. With the loss, UNC is now 14-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Pitt jumps to 11-4 on the season and also sits at 1-1 in the ACC.

Carolina trailed in the game by as many as 24 points, and was only able to cut the scoring margin at its closest to 7 points with 5:33 remaining in the first half.

Reigning ACC Player of the Week sophomore forward Stephanie Mavunga was held to only 12 points, on 4-12 shooting – very unparalleled to her 24-plus-point average and sharp shooting accuracy in the past two games. Sophomore Allisha Gray led the way for the Heels with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

As for Pitt, the Panthers sealed their victory over the highest ranked AP team in program history behind senior point guard Brianna Keisel, who netted a game high 22 points as well as nine rebounds and five assists. Keisel also had plenty of help. Senior Monica Wignot grabbed her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Stasha Carey finished with 17 points.

This upset win marks the first for the Panthers over an AP top-10 team in over 6 years.
