As a passionate rivalry found its way into the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament on Friday, the second-ranked Tar Heels made quick work of the No. 15 seed Duke Blue Devils at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

Led by senior star Hayley Carter, UNC (33-2) laid a clean sweep on the Blue Devils–on the way to a 4-0 victory and a berth in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Although Duke (22-6) won the doubles point when the two teams played in the regular season, the Tar Heels made it look easy on Friday.

UNC’s Sara Daavettila and Makenna Jones–a pair of freshman–won their doubles match by a score of 6-1. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels’ top pairing of Carter and sophomore Jessie Aney followed suit with a 6-2 victory of their own to clinch the point.

“That’s probably the best doubles we’ve played in a while,” Tar Heel head coach Brian Kalbas said afterward. “They beat us pretty handily the first time so for us to get the doubles point got us off to a good start.”

In singles competition, UNC received straight set victories from all three of its top stars–Carter, Aney and Daavettila–in order to clinch the win.
