After opening the season with a thrilling overtime victory over No. 12 Duke last weekend, the fourth-ranked UNC women’s soccer team traveled to Florida this week for a pair of road matches.

The Tar Heels again played extra soccer on Friday, as they fell just short against Central Florida in Orlando–with the Golden Knights picking up a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

Christine Creighton’s goal in the 105th minute provided the difference on a night where Dorian Bailey gave UNC a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the action.

UCF (2-1) answered with a goal of its own just 10 minutes later, however, which ultimately led to a stalemate lasting longer than 90 minutes of game time.

Following Friday’s upset loss, the Tar Heels went to Tampa for a Sunday afternoon match against South Florida.

UNC (2-1) used three goals from freshman Taylor Otto–the team’s first hat trick in nearly four years–on the way to a 4-2 victory over the Bulls.

Otto scored each of the team’s goals in the first half, as the Tar Heels went into the intermission tied at 2-2.

After halftime, UNC tallied an incredible 16 shots on goal compared to just two for South Florida.

Freshman Alessia Russo–who just joined the Tar Heels this week from England–scored the game-winner in the 74th minute.

Otto then provided the insurance in the 85th minute, with her second goal off of a penalty kick during the afternoon.

Up Next:

The Tar Heels will have a pair of games in Durham next weekend as part of the Duke Nike Classic. First up, on Friday, is a match against Auburn at 5 p.m. UNC will then regroup before facing off against UNCW on Sunday at 11 a.m.
