UNC women’s basketball secured a 69-62 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon from the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Jamie Cherry and Stephanie Watts led the Tar Heel scoring effort with 17 points, while Destinee Walker added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Carolina is now 8-5 on the season on the strength of three wins in the last four ballgames heading into the holiday break.

Watts knocked down five three pointers, the final of which closed down the third quarter of play. Walker then opened the final quarter with a conventional three-point play giving the Tar Heels a 52-46 lead.

Southern Miss came back to tie the game at 60 with just over a minute to go, before Carolina closed out the game with a 9-2 streak to ensure the win.

Cherry knocked down all six of her free throw attempts in the final 22 seconds of play.

Carolina returns to the floor in Carmichael Arena against New Hampshire on December 29 at two o’clock.
