CHAPEL HILL – The No. 15 UNC women’s basketball team opened each half with double-digit runs on route to a 100-49 win over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Xylina McDaniel drained a three 55 seconds into the contest for the first basket and went on to lead the team with 15 points. She was one of five players who scored in double figures and was also perfect from behind the arc at 2-2.

The Tar Heels started on a 10-0 run using up an early Buccaneer timeout before the Bucs got on the board with a three of its own. Carolina forced another Charleston Southern timeout before the halfway mark of the first half when jumping out to a 22-3 lead.

The Bucs pulled to within 11 before the less-than-eight-minute media timeout, but the Heels ran away again on route to a 19-point halftime lead at 49-30.

UNC opened the second half with a 15-0 run. From that point, the deficit never got closer than 29, and the Tar Heels coasted to their eighth win of the season—the second time doing so with a score of 100 or more.

With the win, Carolina improved to 8-2; Charleston Southern fell to 3-4.

Freshman forward Stephanie Mavunga scored a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Alisha Gray, sophomore guard N’Dea Bryant, and freshman guard Diamond DeShields all scored in double figures.

UNC is on the road Monday and Wednesday in South Carolina for the Myrtle Beach Classic. The Tar Heels face the New Orleans Privateers Monday and the South Carolina Gamecocks Wednesday.
