On a busy night for Carolina’s athletics department, UNC volleyball got off to a great start in the Carolina Classic. This six-game invitational includes George Washington University, James Madison University and the University of Albany as well as the hosting UNC Tar Heels. Last night started with James Madison defeating Albany 3-0, then UNC took the floor at 7PM to battle the George Washington Colonials.

Carolina’s athleticism and teamwork were on full display throughout a 3-0 dominating victory. Standout performers Kayla Berringer and Ece Taner caused the Colonials to scramble with eleven kills and seven digs respectively. Jordyn Schnabl was excellent as well, with a team-high 20 set assists. UNC’s largely sophomore- and junior-laden team showed excellent teamwork with a variety of deceptive plays leading to a straight-set victory.

Play continues today with a pair of early games with two more at 5:30 and 7:30. George Washington bounced back and defeated Albany 3-0, while UNC added an 8th victory to their undefeated season by taking out JMU 3-0 as well. Leigh Andrew and Berringer were the keys to victory in a much closer contest than the previous night’s matchup. James Madison managed 21, 22, and 23 points in the first three sets but couldn’t close the door on the Tar Heels.

George Washington takes on James Madison in Match 5 today at 5:30PM, and Carolina meets Albany for Match 6 at 7:30PM. All matches are at Carmichael Arena on UNC’s middle campus and admission is free of charge. Parking is available in multiple locations around campus.
