COLLEGE PARK, MD – The UNC softball team closed out its regular on a positive note with an 8-1 win against Maryland in College Park on Sunday.

The Tar Heels scored early and often in the season finale as they took a 6-0 lead just three innings into the contest. Sophomore Amber Parrish and redshirt freshman Jenna Kelly led the way in scoring with a homerun and two RBIs each.

Maryland tried to get something going in the bottom of the sixth with a single run, but it wasn’t enough. Carolina added two security runs in the top of the seventh and held on defensively to take the win.

Junior Lori Spoingola tallied her 28th win of the season pitching a complete game; she gave up six hits but struck out six and only walked one.

With the win, Carolina improved to 38-18, 13-8 in the ACC; Maryland finished the season 29-24, 11-7.

The ACC tournament begins Thursday May 9 in Tallahassee, Florida.
