The UNC men’s tennis team got its NCAA Tournament off to a fast start Friday afternoon at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, defeating the VCU Rams 4-0 in First Round competition.

UNC–which is the No. 9 overall seed in the event–took momentum by winning the doubles point in convincing fashion.

William Blumberg and Robert Kelly earned a 6-1 victory on Court One, while senior Jack Murray teamed with Simon Soendergaard to pick up a 6-2 win on Court Two–handing the Tar Heels the first team point of the afternoon.

“It was a big priority for us during the week to put an emphasis on doubles and I think all that practice paid off today,” Murray said after the match.

In singles play, UNC (25-4) won all six of its first sets and continued to display a great deal of dominance.

Murray, Kelly and Ronnie Schneider clinched the overall victory for the Tar Heels by finishing off their opponents in straight sets.
