Following a pair of weekend victories at home over Notre Dame (4-0) and Vanderbilt (4-1), the UNC men’s tennis team earned a spot in February’s ITA Team Indoor Championships.

It’s the third year in a row that the Tar Heels–who won last year’s event–have qualified for the 16-team tournament, which takes place in Charlottesville, Virginia.

UNC improved its season record to 7-0 after the wins, with head coach Sam Paul very impressed with his team’s performance.

“I’m really pleased,” UNC coach Sam Paul said after the team’s win on Sunday. “We played well. I really liked our energy coming out in doubles. Yesterday’s match helped us a lot and we were very focused – it was the best doubles we’ve played this year.”

The Tar Heels took the doubles point in both matches over the weekend.

Senior Ronnie Schneider–UNC’s top singles player–clinched the team’s tournament berth with his individual victory in straight sets over Vanderbilt’s Cameron Klinger.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a road match at Illinois on Feb. 4, followed by a home contest with Ole Miss on Feb. 11.

The ITA Team Indoor Championships take place soon after, running from Feb. 17-20.

“We’re growing, we’re getting better,” Paul said. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do but that’s what makes it fun.”
