UNC kicker Nick Weiler has been named a semifinalist for the 2016 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup.

The award is presented annually to the student-athlete that best displays character, teamwork and citizenship, that attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport and society, according to the university.

Weiler, a junior from Fairfax Station, Virginia, has been a peer mentor in the Carolina Leadership Academy for two years, according to UNC, and he has participated in the Rising Stars Program.

Officials say Weiler also volunteers weekly at New Hope Elementary School as a mentor to students and as coordinator on the Pen Pals program. A release from UNC says Weiler also works with Habitat for Humanity, Carolina Dreams, the Charles House and the UNC Children’s Hospital.

The award is named in honor of legendary former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. The Wooden Cup is open to all college athletes, all divisions and all sports.

Weiler set records during his junior season for most points in a single season and most consecutive extra points for the Tar Heel football team during its 11-3 campaign.
