UNC head women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance appears to have found himself a gem with freshman forward Alessia Russo.

A native of Kent, England, Russo was named the NCAA Division I National Player of the Week on Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

She was also named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in UNC’s wins this past week.

Russo scored the game-winning goal in UNC’s 3-0 win over Miami on Thursday, and tallied both of the Tar Heels’ goals in their 2-0 win over No. 15 Wake Forest on Sunday.

Despite playing in only nine of the team’s 12 games so far, Russo leads UNC with seven goals to this point in the season.

She’ll look to continue her recent run of good form when the Tar Heels face off against Boston College this Saturday.

That match will take place in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and is set to begin at 7 p.m.
