The announcement came Thursday that UNC will host the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers for a non-conference football game at Kenan Stadium during the 2022 season.

It will be the first time the two schools have ever met on the gridiron.

East Tennessee state is a lower-level Football Championship Subdivision school, playing in the Southern Conference.

The school disbanded its football program after the 2003 season, but it was revived prior to the 2015 campaign with former UNC head coach Carl Torbush at the helm.

After a 2-9 season in 2015, East Tennessee State posted a record of 5-6 in 2016 and then went 4-7 in 2017–ultimately leading to Torbush’s retirement in December.

The Buccaneers are now led by head coach Randy Sanders.
