Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik has been named as a finalists for the Broyles Award, which is given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

Chizik is one of five finalists that were announced on Monday.

The others include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

Riley was the offensive coordinator at East Carolina University before making the move to Oklahoma.

The defenses led by Chizik and Venables will square off in the ACC Championship game on Saturday with the number one Clemson Tigers and the eighth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.

Chizik is in his first year leading the UNC defense.
