Needing four straight wins to advance to the Super Regionals after an opening-game loss to Davidson, the second-ranked UNC baseball team is now halfway home.

The Tar Heels cruised to a 10-1 victory over the Chapel Hill Regional’s No. 2 seed–the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles–in an elimination game at Boshamer Stadium early Sunday afternoon.

Freshman right-hander Tyler Baum was fantastic on the mound for UNC–allowing just one run and three hits during his 5.1 inning stint.

As a team, Florida Gulf Coast (43-19) recorded just four hits throughout the entirety of the game.

UNC (48-13) was led offensively by the trio of Kyle Datres, Brandon Riley and Tyler Lynn.

The 4-5-6 hitters in the Tar Heel lineup each contributed a pair of RBIs in a dominant offensive effort.

Head coach Mike Fox’s squad took the lead in the top of the first inning, and never looked back as they refused to watch their amazing season end prematurely.

Through five innings, UNC had built the lead up to 5-0–all while keeping the opposing side’s powerful lineup completely in check.

Florida Gulf Coast scored its only run in the sixth frame on an RBI groundout–a play which came with the bases loaded following a hit batter, a single and a walk.

Riley’s two-run triple then capped a four-run eighth inning for the Tar Heels, and was the team’s 15th, and final, hit of the afternoon.

Up Next:

The win means UNC will take on Davidson in the Regional Final, with the first of two potential games being played Sunday night.

Davidson has yet to lose in the NCAA Tournament so far–meaning the Tar Heels will have to win two games to advance, while a single loss would end their season.

A potential second Regional Final game between the teams would take place Monday.
