A contract extension for UNC head football coach Larry Fedora–a deal which would keep him in Chapel Hill through the 2022 season–was approved Thursday by the university’s Board of Trustees.

The agreement will pay Fedora just under $3.4 million in salary over the next six seasons, plus almost $13.3 million in supplemental compensation.

Fedora will also receive $50,000 each year as an expense allowance. Additional monetary incentives are also included should Fedora win a Coach of the Year award or if UNC were to win the Coastal Division Championship, ACC Championship or appear in a prestigious bowl game.

“We are pleased that the Board of Trustees has approved the terms of Coach Fedora’s contract, which will allow him to continue our football program’s success into the next decade,” UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said, in a statement released by the school. “Under his leadership, our student-athletes are succeeding in the classroom, contributing positively to our community – and competing for championships.”

In five seasons at UNC, the Tar Heels have compiled a 40-25 record under Fedora. The team has finished atop the ACC Coastal Division two times during that span. This includes the program’s first ever ACC Championship Game appearance after posting an 8-0 conference record in 2015.

Last season’s Tar Heel squad finished 8-5, and had six players chosen in the NFL Draft–showing that Fedora has proved an ability to both win games and produce next-level talent.

“I enjoy coaching at the University of North Carolina and I appreciate the trust Chancellor Folt and Bubba Cunningham have shown in the leadership of our program,” Fedora said. “Our staff and players have worked diligently over the last five years to build a program that encompasses all aspects of the student-athlete experience, while simultaneously achieving success on the field.”
