On the heels of a 3-9 season, the UNC football team has added former Tar Heel linebacker Tommy Thigpen to its coaching staff–according to a report published by Inside Carolina on Monday.

Thigpen–who played in Chapel Hill from 1989-1992–has spent the last five seasons as the linebackers coach at Tennessee.

He was also named the National Recruiter of the Year in 2014 for his work on the Volunteers’ class that season.

Prior to his time in Knoxville, he did an earlier stint at UNC from 2005-2008 as linebackers coach–before moving on to Auburn in a similar role from 2009-2012.

His presence should immediately provide the Tar Heels with a boost both on defense and with recruiting.
