With UNC anxiously awaiting the NBA Draft decisions for both point guard Joel Berry and forward Tony Bradley, the Tar Heels added another big man to their Class of 2017.

Four-star forward Garrison Brooks (6-foot-9, 220 pounds) from Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama gave UNC and head coach Roy Williams a verbal commitment on Friday night.

Although Brooks isn’t ranked among the nation’s top 100 players, Scout.com lists him as the 22nd best player at his position.

Brooks was originally headed to Mississippi State, but received a release from his commitment earlier this month.

He immediately becomes the Tar Heels’ highest-ranked big man recruit, however, as most recruiting networks have him listed higher than fellow incoming freshmen Brandon Huffman and Sterling Manley.

Should Bradley decide to leave Chapel Hill for the NBA after just one year, Brooks could play an important role for the defending national champions next season.

Luke Maye–a rising junior–would be UNC’s lone post player with any college experience if Bradley does decide to leave.

Guards Jalek Felton and Andrew Platek will join Brooks, Huffman and Manley at UNC next season.

A scholarship offer is also still on the table for consensus top 10 recruit Kevin Knox–a 6-foot-8 small forward from Florida who could provide a suitable replacement for Justin Jackson on the wing.
