Tar Heel Soul Searching

CHAPEL HILL– The 55-31 loss to the ECU Pirates Saturday was hard to digest for the Carolina football team.

Now sitting at 1-3 on the season, it appears nothing is going right for the Tar Heels. And Head Coach Larry Fedora says as much.

“As I’ve said before we got a long way to go. We still have too many missed tackles defensively, still too many penalties, not playing smart, and still not clicking on offense. We still got to get a lot better,” Coach Fedora says.

An animated Coach Fedora says his team is displaying no passion on the football field, unable to handle adversity and fight for every play.

“I know this, you got to play the game with passion, you got to play it with enthusiasm, and you got to play it with energy. No matter what happens, you can’t let one play affect the next play. And we obviously don’t have that right now,” Coach Fedora says.

With a defense that was unable to wrap up and bring Pirate players to the ground and an offense that was often anemic, unable to sustain long drives, Coach Fedora says he was left scratching his head following the dismal performance.

“I don’t know if there was anybody offensively that was any good in the first half. I’m not sure if we did anything right in the first half anywhere, offensively and defensively. It’s hard for me to tell you what went wrong when everything went wrong,” Coach Fedora says.

Some boos were cast down by fans in Kenan Stadium, but Coach Fedora says he didn’t notice them. And despite the disappointing start to the season, Coach Fedora says his expectations will not be changed.

“We’re going to keep working extremely hard to meet those expectations. But I’m not going to lower my expectations because of a poor performance. That’s not going to happen,” Coach Fedora says.

Coach Fedora says at this point every Tar Heel player and member of the coaching staff is going to find out what they’re made of. He says when things are going bad, you find out more about yourself.
