North Carolina Women’s Basketball‘s leading scorer and the National Freshman of the Year, Diamond DeShields is transferring from UNC, according to UNC Athletics.

“I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave The University of North Carolina,” Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell said in a statement.

UNC Athletics said it does not know where DeShields will play next year, and she couldn’t be reached for comment on Thursday.

DeShields was the ACC Rookie of the Year and was ninth in scoring among all players in the league. She also led Carolina in steals, was third on the team in assists, and pulled down the fourth-most rebounds.

Before this announcement, UNC was on track to return all players from the team that was stopped nine points shy of a trip to the Final Four.

Coach Hatchell concluded her statement on DeShield’s departure saying, “As most everyone knows, I was out and missed the entire season with leukemia. Thankfully, I’m in complete remission and will be back 100% for next season. It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well.”
