A trio of home runs helped carry the No. 15 UNC baseball team to a 9-3 series-opening victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
Kyle Datres, Cody Roberts and Ike Freeman each recorded a round-tripper for the Tar Heels (25-13, 13-6 ACC), who scored five runs in the second inning to take control of the game early on.
Following a two-run single from Michael Busch, Datres promptly sent a three-run blast over the wall in left field to give the home side a 5-1 lead.
Georgia Tech (22-17) got a run back in the third inning, but UNC responded with two more runs in the fourth on an inside-the-park home run from Roberts–the team’s first such play since 2004.
Freeman added a solo shot in the seventh for the Tar Heels, while Brandon Riley completed the game’s scoring with an RBI groundout in the eighth.
