As if it comes as any surprise, the national champions finished atop the final USA Today Coaches Poll of the men’s college basketball season.

After not being ranked No. 1 all year long, the Tar Heels finally reached the mountaintop at precisely the right time–following the sixth NCAA Tournament title in program history.

The Tar Heels received all 31 first place votes, with runner-up Gonzaga checking in at No. 2.

Other top five teams included: No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Kansas and No. 5 Kentucky.

UNC defeated three of the final top five teams on its path to the championship.

A lackluster tournament performance by the ACC as a whole, meant that the league finished with just five teams among the coaches’ top 25–although that was still the most ranked schools of any league.

Besides UNC, the conference was represented by No. 13 Duke, No. 14 Louisville, No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 24 Florida State.
