The No. 12 North Carolina baseball team rebounded from its opening series loss a week ago to edge Xavier 3-2 on Sunday to claim the 2-1 series win at Boshamer Stadium.

With the victory, the Tar Heels improved to 3-3 on the season thanks to superb pitching led by freshman Zac Gallen, who held the Musketeer bats scoreless until the seventh inning. Gallen went 6.2 innings and allowed only one unearned run on five hits and no walks.

With the loss, Xavier dropped to 4-2 on the young season.

Carolina trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Alex Rayburn tied the game with a single shot to left and Adam Pate became the hero of the afternoon when his infield single found a gap in the defense.

Spencer Trayner recorded his first NCAA victory with 1.1 relief innings pitched.

In total, eight freshmen hit the field for the Tar Heels Sunday as the youth movement was in full display for the fans in Chapel Hill.

Carolina will return to action Tuesday in a single game against Appalachian State at 3 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
