CHAPEL HILL – UNC Athletic Department spokesman Kevin Best confirms that senior quarterback Bryn Renner’s career at Carolina is over.

“It’s tough, you know,” Renner says. “The fact that it’s over kind of just sunk in.”

A shoulder injury sustained in the N.C.State game Saturday will keep Renner on the sidelines the remainder of the season.

“I hate it for him,” Head Coach Larry Fedora says. “He’s been a tremendous leader for our football team for the last two years since I’ve been here. The guy’s thrown for over 8,000 yards—I think one of only three guys that have done that in the history of Carolina. He’s thrown 64 touchdown passes. He means a lot to this football team.”

The senior signal caller started 32 games for the Tar Heels in his career and is just the third player in Carolina history to reach 8,000 career passing yards. He currently ranks 21st on the ACC career chart with 8,097 passing yards.

Now, it will be up to sophomore Marquise Williams to carry the load for the Tar Heels the rest of the season.

Williams says he’s learned a lot from Renner.

“He influenced me a lot,” Williams says. “He changed a lot of things about me to become more mature; he’s the reason I became more mature than I was last year—I had to focus on more of the game and stuff. The guy has put so much tremendous thoughts and things into me to help me in the off season just to become better at who I was.”

Renner told reporters Tuesday that the doctors told him he partially tore his labrum and fractured his scapula; he says he’s been through this surgery before.

“You really can’t tell until you get in there,” Renner said. “I had it when I was a senior in high school. You really don’t know the extent of it until the doctor goes in there.”
