The 25th-ranked UNC wrestling team came out victorious in seven of the ten individual matches on Friday night in Charlottesville, as the Tar Heels picked up a 24-15 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC opener for both sides.

Perhaps the biggest development of the evening, however, was the return of UNC star Ethan Ramos at 174 pounds. After missing six weeks due to injury, Ramos came back in style with a 14-5 major decision win over Virginia’s Will Schany.

Ramos–ranked 13th in the nation at his weight class–also kick-started a streak of four consecutive match wins for the Tar Heels to close out the dual.

UNC (7-8, 1-0 ACC)next received a 17-2 technical fall victory by 18th-ranked Chip Ness at 184 pounds, before No. 17 Danny Chaid (197 pounds) and Cory Daniel (heavyweight) closed out the match with a pair of wins themselves.

Virginia (3-6, 0-1 ACC) led the dual 15-9 before Ramos took the mat–thanks to starting the night off with back-to-back pins at 125 and 133 pounds–but the Tar Heels’ talent at the heavier weight classes proved to be too much for the Cavaliers to handle.

The Tar Heels next dual is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26 when they host Pitt at Carmichael Arena.
