In a battle between two of the nation’s premier women’s soccer programs on Thursday night, the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions defeated No. 6 UNC by a score of 1-0.

Frannie Crouse scored the game’s only goal for Penn State (4-1) in the seventh minute, after receiving a perfect through ball in stride from teammate Charlotte Williams.

Crouse’s run beat the Tar Heel defenders, leaving an open shot from about 12 yards away–which she buried into the back corner of the net.

Fans at Jeffrey Park were then treated to an extremely defensive game, as their Nittany Lions were able to hang on for the victory despite UNC (4-2) having more possession of the ball during the later stages.

The Tar Heels managed just two shots on goal the entire night, with their best chance coming during the final minutes.

Freshman Alessia Russo watched as her shot from outside the box was deflected over the crossbar by Penn State goalkeeper Rose Chandler with just under three minutes to play–ending UNC’s chances of tying the affair.
