Trailing by two goals with just under two minutes to play on Wednesday at Kenan Stadium, the UNC women’s lacrosse team rallied for a 13-12 victory over the No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies when Olivia Ferrucci scored two times in a 31-second span as time ticked away.

The victory capped what had previously been a remarkable comeback by the Hokies–one that saw them recover from an early 6-1 deficit to take a 12-11 lead with 4:09 remaining.

Jamie Ortega, Marie McCool, Katie Hoeg and Ela Hazar each joined Ferrucci as Tar Heels with two goals in the game. Kara Kigges, Taylor McDaniels and Marisa DiVietro added the other three tallies.

Hazar also added one assist to become the first player in UNC program history to record 100 assists over the course of a career.

The Tar Heels moved to 7-3 overall this season (2-1 ACC) with the win, while the loss dropped Virginia Tech to 9-4 (2-1 ACC).

“Credit to Virginia Tech for playing a great game today,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards.  “They play an aggressive style of offense and they come at you with a lot of different kids and are just dodging right down your gut. I thought we handled that pretty well for the most part today.”
