UNC sophomore first baseman Michael Busch was named Tuesday as one of 40 players on the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, which was released by USA Baseball.

The award is given out annually to the top amateur baseball player in the nation.

So far in 2018, Busch has started all of UNC’s 33 games and served as the primary power option in the heart of the batting order. The Minnesota native is currently second in the entire NCAA with 42 RBIs and leads the team with eight home runs.

Busch also ranks second among all Tar Heels in runs scored (29), hits (40) and slugging percentage (.566).

He becomes the sixth UNC player in the last seven seasons to be featured on the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, following in the footsteps of last year’s nominees JB Bukauskas and Logan Warmoth.

The award will officially be handed out on June 28 in Los Angeles.
