Using a frantic fourth-quarter rally on Thursday afternoon, the Mercer Bears pulled off a stunning 97-86 victory at Carmichael Arena over the UNC women’s basketball team.
Kahlia Lawrence scored a game-high 39 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Mercer (12-2), which overcame a 16-point deficit in the final period–outscoring the Tar Heels 33-8 during that time frame.
The Bears–who picked up their ninth straight victory–also got a whopping 16 assists from Sydni Calloway, the most the Tar Heels have given up to one player since 1985.
UNC (10-3) was led by 26 points from guard Paris Kea and a 19-point, 10-rebound effort from freshman forward Janelle Bailey.
The loss snapped what had been an eight-game winning streak for head coach Sylvia Hatchell and company.
