Facing off against the nation’s top-ranked men’s tennis player–Ohio State’s Mikael Torpegaard–in Sunday’s Tulsa ITA All-American Semifinals, UNC sophomore William Blumberg pulled off a stunning upset victory in three sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-3).

Torpegaard has been ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in every ITA singles ranking since March of 2016, but was unable to hold off the UNC standout in this match.

Last year’s runner-up in the NCAA Singles Championship as a freshman, Blumberg–who went to Tulsa ranked No. 5 in the country–continues to prove that he is among the nation’s best players.

This win showed he should again compete for an NCAA title later this season.

Before that, however, Blumberg will look to add to his trophy count by taking on No. 24 Martin Redlicki from UCLA in Monday’s ITA All-American Championship match.
