UNC freshman William Blumberg became the first men’s tennis player in school history on Sunday to advance to an NCAA Singles Tournament Final–picking up a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Mississippi State’s Nuno Borges in the Semifinals.

“It’s incredible,” Blumberg said after the match. “I honestly couldn’t have even dreamed of something like this. My game has just been clicking at the right time.”

It was the 25th consecutive singles victory for the Greenwich, Connecticut native, who improved to 31-2 in his debut season.

Fittingly enough, the Singles Tournament final will be a rematch between UNC and Virginia–the two groups who played for the Team Championship last week.

Although the Tar Heels came up short against the Cavaliers, Blumberg won his match against the Cavaliers’ Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).

It was the second victory of the season for Blumberg over Kwaitkowski–who will be on the other side of the net opposite UNC’s super freshman on Monday with the national title on the line.
