GREENSBORO – The No. 4 Carolina men’s soccer team is off to a solid, yet soggy start to its 2013 season, snagging a 3-0 win against Elon on Saturday.

Held at Smith Soccer Complex in Greensboro, the exhibition was forced to be relocated to an artificial surface due to the soaking rains.

The first half was scoreless, but the Tar Heels broke the game open in the second period with a goal by Nico Melo coupled with a pair of scores by Chipper Root to gain the decisive three-goal margin that settled the contest.

North Carolina finished with a 14-6 shot advantage against Elon.

Carolina continues its exhibition season with matches next week against Michigan State and Indiana in Fort Wayne, Ind.
