Coming off back-to-back thrilling victories over the weekend at Florida State, the fifth-ranked UNC baseball team did it again Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.

Freshman Ashton McGee went just 1-for-6 in the game, but his bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning handed the Tar Heels a 3-2 victory over the East Carolina Pirates.

It was the fifth victory in a row for UNC (23-6, 9-3 ACC), which is making its case as one of the nation’s top teams.

The Pirates (18-12) opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single from outfielder TJ Riles, but the Tar Heels responded with a pair of runs themselves in the home half of the frame.

Two hit batters and two walks allowed UNC to plate its first run, with Cody Roberts’ hitting a bases-loaded sacrifice fly right after–giving the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead.

Although ECU was able to tie the game in the seventh, similar mistakes led to the visitors’ undoing in extra innings.

Reliever Joe Ingle loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter, which set up McGee’s two-out heroics.

The ball was lined just beyond the reach of Riles in right field, allowing senior Adam Pate to come around and score the winning run.

After sweeping the season series with East Carolina, the Tar Heels will now get ready to travel to face Boston College for a three-game set over the weekend.
