The second-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team bullied its way to its ninth straight victory on Saturday, using a career day from midfielder Marie McCool to go on the road and defeat the No. 20 Louisville Cardinals 15-11.

McCool scored a personal best seven goals in the game, while also chipping in an assist.

One of just two active college players on the U.S. Women’s national team, McCool proved to be unstoppable against a Louisville team (10-5, 2-3 ACC) that opened the game by building a 7-3 lead.

The junior then reeled off three straight goals before halftime, before scoring three more in a row after the locker room break.

This incredible scoring spree brought head coach Jenny Levy’s squad back from a compromising situation, and gave it complete control of the game–something it refused to relinquish the rest of the way.

Senior attacker Molly Hendrick added four goals to UNC’s total, while Ela Hazar scored twice. Carly Reed and Caroline Wakefield each tallied one goal apiece for the Tar Heels (12-1, 5-0 ACC).

“We were challenged in many ways, and the situation demanded our collective focus and fortitude, execution and the ability to dig our cleats in and find a way to win,” Levy said afterwards. “Marie McCool was outstanding, with just dominating play on the field, especially on the offensive end. She was unstoppable.

“This game will be something we can build off of the rest of the season.  It was a great opportunity, and our team rose to the occasion.”

Next up for the streaking Tar Heels is a home game next Saturday vs. Syracuse.
