The Associated Press released its Preseason Men’s Basketball All-American Team on Monday, with UNC senior point guard Joel Berry the first player left off the list.

Berry received 25 of a possible 65 votes from the same national media panel that decides on the AP Top 25 poll each week.

This total left him five votes shy of Missouri freshman wing Michael Porter, who garnered 30 votes to become the fifth, and final member of the team.

Joining Porter on the AP Preseason All-American team is a list that includes: Michigan State sophomore forward Miles Bridges (61 votes), Notre Dame forward Bonzie Colson (47 votes), Arizona guard Allonzo Trier (39 votes) and Villanova guard Jalen Brunson (33 votes).

Berry’s former AAU teammate as a high-school student in Florida–Duke guard Grayson Allen–finished just behind him with 20 votes.

A broken hand suffered after losing a game of NBA 2K18 to teammate Theo Pinson will sideline Berry for the first couple weeks of UNC’s regular season, but the Most Outstanding Player of last year’s Final Four is expected to play a large role for the Tar Heels as they look defend their NCAA title.

UNC is scheduled to open its season–with Berry in a suit on the bench–this Friday against Northern Iowa at the Dean E. Smith Center.
