It’s been nearly seven months since the UNC men’s lacrosse team took home the program’s first national championship with a thrilling win on the field over Maryland, but other honors continued to roll in after that game.

The most recent came on Friday, when the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association recognized Tar Heel head coach Joe Breschi as its 2016 National Coach of the Year.

He became the first UNC coach to win the award since Willie Scroggs in 1981.

Having received great support from the coaching body following the tragic death of his 3-year-old son Michael back in 2004, Breschi took time to recognize those who helped him reach this point.

“I want to thank all of you, my fellow coaches and the IMLCA. I would not be here if it wasn’t for you,” Breschi said. “If it wasn’t for the strength of this group. … if it wasn’t for this group here I wouldn’t be standing here today.”

Breschi wasn’t the only Tar Heel to be recognized during the group’s awards luncheon, however, as UNC offensive coordinator David Metzbower was chosed as the National Assistant Coach of the Year and Scroggs–the team’s coach from 1978-1990–was given the Frenchy Julian Award for Service.
