North Carolina women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell is now part of an exclusive club of basketball coaches with 1,000 career wins.
Hatchell reached the milestone with a victory over Grambling State in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Tuesday afternoon.
Of the 1,000 victories, 728 have come while Hatchell was at the helm in Chapel Hill.
Hatchell, of course, will be known for her tenure leading the Tar Heels. But she was also in the news during her battle against Leukemia that held Hatchell out of the 2013-2014 season.
UNC won the 1994 national championship under Hatchell’s leadership. Hatchell also won two national titles in previous coaching stops.
Hatchell joins former Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt, Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski as the only coaches in NCAA history with 1,000 wins. Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma has a chance to also join the 1,000-win club on Tuesday night.
UNC is 10-2 on the current season.
