The women’s Olympic marathon in Rio de Janeiro came to a conclusion early Monday afternoon with Shalane Flanagan–a former Tar Heel–finishing in sixth place with a time of  2:25:06.

She was the highest-finishing American to run in the race.

Jemima Jelagat Sumgong of Kenya took home the gold medal by breaking the tape after 2:24:04.

Overall, three different American runners finished inside the top 10, with Flanagan–the bronze medalist in 2008’s 10,000 meter race–leading the way.

“That’s by far and away the best result we’ve ever had,” Flanagan said. “We came here to run the races of our lives, and we pretty much did. You can’t ask for better than that. That’s super impressive.”

Her Olympic success comes after a third-place run at the U.S. trials–a race she finished severely dehydrated, needing a wheelchair afterward.
