The No. 7 Carolina women fell to Virginia 152-146 in the team score. However, the No. 16 UNC men downed UVA 154-145 by reeling off wins in four of the final five events.

Head Coach Rich DeSelm says the head-to-head results against perennial powerhouse UVA can have an impact on recruiting battles.

“It’s a moment in time. We’ll see them at the conference championships and at the NCAAs after that. Of course, young high schoolers are looking at our results, our opponent’s results, and seeing where they can fit in and who they like. We do recruit against Virginia a lot. It’s a good rivalry,” Coach DeSelm says.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a home meet against rival N.C.State this Friday at 5 p.m. in Koury Natatorium followed by a trip down to Durham to face Duke on Saturday in the final ACC meet of the season.

The N.C. State meet will serve as Senior Day. Tar Heel swimming stars Stephanie Peacock, Cari Blalock, Alex Gianino, JT Stilley, and Chapel Hill product Carly Smith will take their final dives in Chapel Hill.

Coach DeSelm says these outstanding athletes have left their marks on the program.

“Those folks have been instrumental in our success. They’ve seen a lot of change. Most of them are All-Americans. We always hate to see our seniors go. They’ve provided a great spark to this program and helped us accelerate our success and put us on the national map again. We count on them,” Coach DeSelm says.
