NEWARK, DE – The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored eight goals in the first half and coasted to a 10-0 win over Villanova Sunday afternoon in a neutral-site game played at the University of Delaware’s Rullo Field. Senior Janne Grove and sophomores Casey Di Nardo and Nina Notman scored two goals each, and Loren ShealyEmily WoldSinead Loughran and Emma Bozek added a goal apiece to the total.

“I thought we played a very unselfish game,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “We moved the ball well all over the field and created great scoring chances.”

UNC, ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, is now 2-0 on the season heading into next weekend’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The Tar Heels will play Michigan and the host Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa.

Di Nardo opened the scoring Sunday just 3:45 into the game, on an assist from Bozek. Grove, a graduate student who is in her first year in the program, had her first goal as a Tar Heel in the seventh minute, then added another in the 14th, assisted by Wold.

In the 20th minute, Bozek had her first goal of the season. Less than four minutes later Loughran added her first of the year to put the score at 6-0.

Notman then scored the first goal of her career, in the 25th minute, and added another just over three minutes later. The second came on a penalty corner, assisted by Grove and Wold.

Wold had the next goal, in the 31st minute, to make the score 8-0 at halftime. Shealy led off the second half with a goal, her first of the year, assisted by Wold. The final goal came from the player who scored the first, Di Nardo. On a penalty corner in the 62nd minute, she deflected a shot by Notman into the goal to put the score at 10-0, which would stand as the final.

The Tar Heels finished with 33 shots, 22 in the first half, to Villanova’s one. UNC had 14 penalty corners to one by VU.

Three Carolina goalkeepers shared the shutout. Freshman Shannon Johnson saw the first action of her career, starting and playing the first half. Junior Sassi Ammer started the second half and then played just over 14 minutes before sophomore Rosie Wood came in to finish the game and play in a Tar Heel uniform for the first time.

Also seeing their first action as Tar Heels were redshirt freshmen Rachel BlackCaroline Plyler andTyler Powell.

“It was nice to have everybody have the chance to play and contribute,” Shelton said. “We’re continuing to develop, and this weekend has been a great opportunity for us to work on getting better, and to have personalities gel together.

“Overall, it was a really fun weekend for us. We has some opportunities for team bonding and we got to see lots of our alums – it’s always wonderful to see them cheering for us.”

UNC opened the season on Friday with a 2-1 win at Lock Haven. The Tar Heels’ next two games are against ranked opponents, with No. 9 Michigan on Saturday and No. 13 Iowa on Sunday at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Iowa.
