Just two days removed from taking home the ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week award, UNC junior Ashley Hoffman was tabbed on Wednesday as the National Defensive Player of the Week.

Hoffman has won the conference honors on two occasions this season, but this is her first time getting recognized nationally for her performance.

She helped anchor the Tar Heel defensive unit in its 4-0 shutout victory over No. 3 Virginia–the highest-scoring team in America–this past Friday.

Not only that, Hoffman scored what would ultimately become the game-winning goal off a penalty corner attempt just before halftime.

Despite playing a defensive role, Hoffman leads UNC with nine goals and 23 points this season.

She’ll look to continue her high level of play this weekend, as the Tar Heels have games on Saturday and Sunday against No. 11 Louisville and VCU.
