Traveling to New York for two games in two days provided the seventh-ranked UNC field hockey team with plenty of drama this weekend, but more importantly the trip provided a pair of victories.

The day after Eva Van’t Hoog sunk Syracuse in overtime, the Tar Heels (9-2) rallied to defeat the No. 20 Albany Great Danes by a score of 2-1–using an overtime winner from junior Malin Evert to seal the deal.

After Ashley Hoffman’s shot was blocked by Albany goalkeeper Melissa Nealon, Evert swooped in for the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net just 56 seconds into the extra period.

This came after Albany (4-4) took a 1-0 lead with under 10 minutes left in regulation on a goal from Katie McCallum, and appeared to be in position for an upset.

UNC responded less than two minutes later, however, with a goal off the stick of Gab Major–a play that resulted from a penalty corner.

With momentum back on their side, the Tar Heels went into the overtime period ready to repeat Saturday’s ending and extend their winning streak to six games.

“The ball bounced our way in overtime,” head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “Credit to Albany for a great game today.  They’re a well-coached team and they outplayed us in the first half. I think our depth was a factor in the second half. We’re happy to escape with the win.”
