Diamond Heels Trio Named Freshman All-America
CHAPEL HILL – UNC Baseball standouts Skye Bolt, Landon Lassiter and Trent Thornton were named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
This marks the 12th consecutive year UNC has placed at least one player on the team, and there are three Tar Heels honored for the first time since 2005.
Bolt has been a staple in the Carolina lineup in 2013, batting .341 with six homers, 49 RBIs and 13 doubles as a freshman. Despite missing 17 games with a broken foot, the Woodstock, Ga., native was the first Tar Heel freshman to earn All-ACC honors since Colin Moran in 2011.
Lassiter is second on the team with a .357 average and has scored a club-best 72 runs while getting on base at a .500 clip. A High Point, N.C., product, Lassiter has started 60 of 64 games for Carolina, primarily at designated hitter.
Thornton enters the weekend with a team-best 1.17 ERA in 77.0 innings. The second-team All-ACC selection has gone from mid-week starter to the team’s most valuable bullpen arm, and he owns a 9-1 record to go with eight saves. A native of Charlotte, Thornton has walked just 12 batters on the year and holds opposing hitters to a .192 average.
