The North Carolina baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision Wednesday evening in Chapel Hill to fall to 14-6 on the season.

With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 11-6 on the year and have now won nine of their last 11 games.

Wednesday’s game was scheduled after Carolina’s Tuesday meeting with Princeton was cancelled due to wintry weather.

WVU pitcher John Mears tossed a complete game, only surrendering three hits to the Tar Heel bats. The Tar Heels started Luis Paula on the mound. Paula was able to hold off the WVU lineup until the fifth inning, when the Mountaineers broke through for a 2-0 lead.

UNC failed to get a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning. Adam Pate’s double scored Michael Russell, but that was to be the lone run of the contest for the Tar Heels.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a three-game ACC series with Georgia Tech starting at 5 p.m. Friday at Boshamer Stadium.
