CHAPEL HILL –  UNC junior Colin Moran was selected sixth in the 2013 MLB draft by the Miami Marlins Thursday night.

Less than 24 hours before Carolina’s first of a best-of-three super regional against South Carolina, the third baseman was a hot topic in the pros. According the News and Observer, Moran was rumored to be a possibility for the No. 1 pick by the Houston Astros.

Moran batted in a single-season record in runs with 86 while getting on base nearly 48 percent of the time, which was 23rd in the country. He’s currently third on the team with a .348 batting average, second with 88 hits, and in a commanding lead in walks with 60.

He is the second member of his family to be drafted in the first round. His uncle, B.J. Surhoff was selected No. 1 overall in 1985. His brother, Brian was chosen in the seventh round in 2009. Surhoff and Brian both attended UNC as well.

The National-League-East Marlins are currently last in the MLB at 16-44.
