UNC junior Ben Griffin–a Chapel Hill native–finished tied for second at the ACC Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday after losing in a playoff.

Virginia’s Jimmy Stanger won the event with a birdie on his final hole of regulation, and then another on the first playoff hole at the Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, South Carolina.

Griffin held the lead by two strokes entering the third, and final, round after posting a 5-under 67 on Friday and a 2-under 70 in Saturday morning’s second round.

Playing the final round on Saturday afternoon due to inclement weather concerns for Sunday, Griffin bogeyed four of his first nine holes to give back some of the momentum he gained early on.

He would recover well enough to get himself into the playoff, but ultimately was unable to pull out the victory.

“We’re so proud of Ben’s performance this weekend,” UNC head coach Andrew Sapp said afterward. “He played so well and his hard work and dedication is paying off this spring and now into the postseason.”

Now Griffin and the rest of the Tar Heels will have to wait until May 4, when the NCAA Golf Committee announces the fields for the six NCAA Regionals.
