The No. 17 North Carolina baseball team scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back from there, claiming a 12-1 win over Appalachian State Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 4-3 on the season while the Mountaineers fell to 0-8.

Parks Jordan, Tom Zengel, Korey Dunbar and Joe Dudek each drove in a pair of runs for the Tar Heels.

Luis Paula got his first pitching start of the season and gave up just one unearned run and three hits in 4.2 innings with five strikeouts Reilly Hovis finished the fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth to get the win.

Taylore Cherry had a nice debut. He was perfect, striking out a pair and needing just 19 pitches to record six outs. And finally, freshman A.J. Bogucki closed it out in the ninth in his first outing as a Tar Heel.

Next up for the Tar Heels is a home series starting Friday at 3 p.m. against North Florida.
