At the beginning of last season–his second in Chapel Hill–UNC guard Kenny Williams established himself in the Tar Heels’ starting lineup with strong perimeter defense and the ability to space the floor with his outside shot.

In mid-February, however, a torn right meniscus suffered in practice forced Williams to miss UNC’s final 14 games of the season–a stretch that included the team’s run to the national championship.

The 6-foot-5-inch native of Midlothian, Virgnia stayed away from surgery on the knee until recently.

Team spokesman Steve Kirschner announced Tuesday that Williams had a successful operation back on July 7.

He is expected back by the time the Tar Heels open up preseason practice in October, and should again compete for a major role.
