The Tar Heels Top Maryland In Series Opener

CHAPEL HILL- The No. 1 North Carolina baseball team won the first of a three-game series Friday night against Maryland, 12-4.

The Tar Heels had three crucial innings as they tallied three runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth innings, and five runs in the seventh inning.

North Carolina exceeded 10 runs for the 14th time this season.

Junior left-handed pitcher Kent Emanuel played eight innings and allowed no hits into the sixth inning until freshman infielder Jose Cuas hit a home run to snap the no-hit bid. Emanuel allowed just three hits, had six strikeouts, and improved to 6-1 on the season.

Freshman outfielder Skye Bolt helped lead the Tar Heels to victory as he went 3-for-5 with a double and a recorded a career-high of five RBIs. Senior first baseman Cody Stubbs also reached a career-high with four RBIs.

Freshman short stop Landon Lassiter had a career-high of three runs, while Stubbs, Brian Holberton, and sophomore second baseman Mike Zolk each added two hits for the Tar Heels.

The Terps recorded one run in the sixth, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth.

With the win the Tar Heels improved to 27-10 overall and 10-2 in the ACC. The Terps fell to 16-3, 4-9.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium as the Tar Heels aim for their fifth ACC series win of the season.
