Basketball coaching legend and UNC alumnus Larry Brown is facing serious sanctions from the NCAA.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting the NCAA may charge Brown with “lack of coach control” at Southern Methodist University, where he’s currently head coach. The NCAA probe revolves around an assistant coach who allegedly provided improper academic assistance to a player, guard Keith Frazier. Brown’s not accused of providing improper assistance, but the NCAA may charge him with having known about the misconduct and not doing anything about it.

Larry Brown has been in trouble with the NCAA before. In addition to SMU, he’s also coached at UCLA and Kansas, and both programs were hit with sanctions stemming from his tenure as head coach.

The Yahoo! report says SMU had a multi-day hearing with the NCAA last month, to deal with allegations involving the golf program as well as men’s basketball.

UPDATE:  The NCAA handed down their punishment for Larry Brown and SMU on Tuesday.  SMU will be banned from postseason play in 2016 and Brown will be suspended for nine games.  Art Chansky shares his thoughts on Larry Brown and his third round of NCAA sanctions.
