Winter weather has caused the cancellation of eight school days in the last ten days for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City and Orange County Schools. It has also wreaked havoc for local high school basketball teams, who were supposed to start play in their respective state tournaments on Tuesday.

On Saturday, they will finally get their chance to play.

The Chapel Hill girls basketball team will be the only local team to play at home on Saturday. The Tigers, seeded fifth in the 3-A East, will take on Eastern Wayne on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at CHHS.

Meanwhile, the Chapel Hill boys basketball team will travel to Jacksonville on Saturday at 2.

In the 4-A state playoffs, the East Chapel Hill boys basketball team will travel to J.H. Rose in Greenville Saturday night at 6. The East Chapel Hill girls basketball team goes to Hope Mills to face South View Saturday at 4.

Meanwhile, for the first time in recent memory, there will be state playoff games played on a Sunday. In the 3-A boys basketball playoffs, the Orange boys basketball team will host South Johnston at 4 in Hillsbrough. Cedar Ridge travels to Eastern Wayne on Sunday at 2.

For the winners, it could be a long week.

On Friday, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released a statement proclaiming that all team must have their second-round games completed by Monday and all third-round games must be finished by Tuesday.  The regional rounds start Wednesday, which means some teams may have to win 5 games in 7 days to reach the state championship game at the Smith Center.
